Benzonatate Patent to Reduce Choking Hazard
Benzonatate is a non-narcotic oral cough suppressant.
Current formulations of benzonatate, if released in the mouth, can cause oropharyngeal anesthesia that may lead to choking.
This new formulation preserves the advantages of the drug while eliminating the hazards associated with the current formula
Using the ion exchange resin technology eliminates the choking hazard by not allowing release of drug in the oral cavity
Both a strong acid resin as well as a weak acid resin can be used
This formula can be used for both immediate and extended release
